A Guardian Ad Litem (Guardian) is an individual, typically a family law attorney, who is appointed by the court to advocate for the child during a divorce or contested custody case. As custody cases are often one of the most complex areas of family law, judges often do not have the time to investigate and gather the necessary information required to make an informed decision about custody and parenting time. A Guardian is not necessarily appointed in every case, however, he/she can be very helpful in making a recommendation to the court regarding what is in the child’s best interest.
Levine Smith Coburn & Koslin attorneys have experience serving in the Guardian Ad Litem role and advocating for a child’s best interest.
